Happy Boys Day!

We went to dinner with Jeff's mom and sister for boys day.  Since Thursday was a work night for most of us, we decided to go on Saturday instead.  Jeff picked Makino Chaya, since they are a buffet and have lots of choices that he likes.
Sashimi plate ordered from menu.
Jeff's "dessert" plate...crab.
This was Kavin's plates of shells.

The great thing is being able to order things like soft shell crab from the menu again!

Out of the mouth of babes...Orientation

Last night...

Kavin:  Aunty, I just want to stay with you tonight.
Me:  No.  You have orientation tomorrow.
Kavin:  What's that?
Me:  You're going to the big school, and they're going to show you around and meet your teachers, see your classroom for next year.
Kavin:  I already went around.  They told me I'm a good boy, and I can go there next year.  I don't have to go.  I'm going with you.
Me:  Go to sleep already.  We're going to eat crab tomorrow night after you're done.
Kavin:  Alright.  I know how to use the crab squeezers and open it.  I'm smart that's why!
*sigh*

Out of the mouth of babes...No fun

Me: Kavin, did you have fun at your fun fair today?
Kavin: You mean my family fun fair. No, it wasn't fun. All my mom did was go around and buy stuff. Food.
Me: Oh. Did you eat any of it?
Kavin: Hey aunty, do you want to see my fun toy that I got today at the family fun fair?
LOL! Short term memory, kid.

31 cents scoops

Many of you see my posts on facebook for the half off deals or freebies.  I find many of them through emails or other super saver people that have websites that feed into facebook or twitter.  No, I don't get all of them, but I know that there is someone out there that appreciates the savings the way that I do when there is something I come across as useful or I would use anyway.

Jeff knows that I always have a coupon or gift certificate/card on hand for "eating out" nights.  We only eat out on bargains.  Who can afford to otherwise?  So, last night he texted and wanted to eat out for dinner.  He asked what coupons or gift certificates I had.  I said that Baskin Robbins had 31 cents ice cream scoops.  Hey, I can eat dessert first if I want to!  He said that had nothing to do with dinner, but we could go to Ruby Tuesdays, which is right next door.  Fine.  I expected a line, but I didn't expect a LINE.

When we first got there, I commented that I should probably stand in line already.  Jeff said there were a lot of little kids, so by the time we finish dinner, the line should be shorter, since they should all be at home in bed on a school night.  Not so.  We came out, and the line was just as long, except now, there were lots of cranky kids instead of kids just waiting to get their ice cream.

This was the first time that we've stood in line for one of BR's promotional events.  They usually do two a year that I know of.  I know of friends who have done it and posted pictures, but I had forgot my phone in the car and decided to leave it at that.

All in all, it was an interesting experience, to say the least.  In front of us was a mother and daughter.  The daughter ended up sitting in line and doing her homework.  She moved very slowly as the line moved up.  The mom, well, let's just say "bling" from the jacket to the purse to the toe nails.  Yes, there was lots of time to observe people.  In front of them, a couple with a very hyped up kid about 3 years old kept running around, breaking the plants on the side, and shrieking in a very annoying voice when they finally decided to contain him.  In the back of us was a couple who I first thought was married by the big bling on her finger, but after listening to their conversation the entire time, I came to the conclusion that they weren't, since they were trying to out impress each other with their job talk and how much they get paid and how they could've scooped ice cream faster.  Definitely in the dating stage.  In the back of them were a bunch of young, Caucasian, loud and irritating adults.  Sorry, military people, but they didn't make you folks look good by their obnoxious behavior and bragging.  Also, want to know what the true test of a MAN is?  One that will kill a 747, B52 bomber, or otherwise known as a humongous roach.  Yes, every single one of them stood around looking at it, including the "chef" who could have taken a job for $20 an hour but his girlfriend told him not to.  I pointed at it, and Jeff went to smack it.  Guess who jumped the fastest and furthest?  No, it wasn't me, it was all those guys standing in the back of us.  I just hope that doesn't happen in a war situation.

Finally at the front of the line, so I read the two signs that are posted on the doors with very explicit instructions on how this promotion works.  So, in addition to being able to get up to 3 kiddie scoops of ice cream, per person who is physically present (yes, it said that), you can purchase one waffle cone, one 2 scoop sundae, and one small splash at discounted prices.  Well, after waiting in line for over 2 hours, yes folks, you read that right, I was getting all three.  Two of my things could go in the freezer, and Jeff was going to get his share as well.  I was going to make my time worth it!  Apparently, the young kids working inside were either tired already of having to serve all those people for over 5 hours, or they were just plain dumb.  They told us that we could only have one thing, because that's what they've been doing for everyone else.  Okay, those were fighting words.  I'm very good at reading comprehension, and the sign says "in addition to" which means I can get all 3.  I point that out and tell them that if that's so, they should have corrected all the signs posted in and out of the store (they had already corrected something else), or it could be said that it was false advertising, and they could be sighted for that.  Not to mention that we saw others walk out with packages that I'm sure they didn't buy at regular price while carrying/eating their 3 scoops in a waffle bowl.  Yes, I was going to be the big B if necessary, because it was 10:30pm and over two hours later of standing in line and listening to a bunch of i*****.  If I had to, I would take a picture of the sign and call the number on it.  Thankfully, and very wise of worker who said that, she called the person in charge who must have corrected their thinking really quickly.

Anyway, over two hours later, this is what I walked out with.  Jeff had his own.

How to crack an Easter egg

Kavin's version of cracking open a plastic egg after the FCF Egg Hunt.

Happy Easter Aunty Lisa!

Mele (running in the house with this): Happy Easter Aunty Lisa!
Me: Thanks Mele. It's my favorite color.
Mele (running back out the door): I know.
Jeff: Maybe you got the golden egg.
Me (trying to open it): I don't think so. It's really heavy.
Sun Lee: That must be the one that Sammy was stuffing.
(Me-squeeze it open and dirt comes out falling into my plate of food!)
Me: Oh no! And that's my good stuff!
After throwing the dirt out, I had to wash off my food, because it was the good stuff!

THE letter arrives!

Today, THE letter arrived.  Mary called Kavin to let him know that he'll be going to Kamehameha Kapalama for kindergarten next year.  His first expression (I missed the photo op) was of joy with his right hand covering his mouth and his eyes opened wide.  Imua for the next 13 years!

Out of the mouth of babes...Headlights

Kavin told me earlier he thought he had headlights (while scratching his head furiously). I asked if he meant head lice. He said no, he said head lights. I asked why he thought he had head lights, and he said, "you know, never mind." So, I asked him if he was referring to his sweaty head from running around being a ninja and that he was scratching. He rolled his eyes. I told him to go take a bath. Vocabulary is growing...never mind that it's the wrong way!

Out of the mouth of babes...Chinatown and salami

March 7, 2011: The kids have been learning about different cultures and families. The parents (and aunty) were invited to watch a program and eat different cultural foods. I was very impressed when he told me this morning that he could speak Chinese, Japanese, German, and Hawaiian. That was until I realized he was getting speaking and nationality mixed up!
March 11, 2011:  Spending the day with a so starving child who's hungry as a lion and tiger. His ancestors came from Chinatown where his surname is from. He came from Chinatown, because you used to live where your surname comes from, according to him. His mommy used to live in China and came over here on the boat and was pregnant with 5 children for 20 years. Every so often he turns to the Japanese channel to watch the salami make the water flood the houses and cars in Japan with the fire in the middle. Good laughs!

Kavin's Multi Cultural Day

Kavin's class celebrated a Multi Cultural Day at Maemae School.  The kids put on a program followed by a cultural tasting feast.  I promised Kavin that I would video tape him, so his mommy could see what a great job he did.

Out of the mouth of babes...Kamehameha Schools Testing

Me (to Kavin): So, on Saturday, you're going to go up to the big school to meet with the aunty about kindergarten.
Kavin *eyes rolling*: Aunty, I'm going for testing.
Mary: And when you go...
Kavin: I know. I'm going to introduce myself and ask them if they want me to show them what I know.

...Smart alack kid.

Out of the mouth of babes...No school days (Koen)

Earlier today when he was dropped off...
Koen:  Aunty, my mommy said that when I don't have school, you have to watch me.
Me:  Okay. I'll put you in the rubbish can tomorrow and watch it.
Koen:  NOOOOOOO. I'm not rubbish. You jus take me with you wherever you go!
Me:  Oh. Is that how it works?
Koen:  Yep.

Later that night...
Me:  Are you going to sleep on Kavin's bed?
Koen:  Yes, cause I didn't get to sleep on it all week.  And you didn't see me all weekend, so you miss me so much, and I have to stay with you.

Out of the mouth of babes...Crusts and hair

Last year, Kavin's class had career month, and the moms and dads went in to share what they did for work.  One of the dad's, Uncle Walter (I think), is a manager at a Papa John's.  As you've probably guessed, he shared making pizza with them, and those lucky kids got to sample it.  A few days later as we're driving along, Kavin tells me that the crust from the pizza is bumpy with "stuff" (while he makes motions) on it, while the crust on bread is not.  Also, the crust on the bread grows hair, but the kind that Uncle Walter had doesn't.  Okay, fine.

Several days later, he tells me I need to take the crusts off of his sandwich.  I ask him why and doesn't he want his hair to grow.  He tells me, "No, little boys don't need armpits.  Only daddies and uncles have armpits."  Now what does that have to do with his sandwich.  Well, armpits=hair.  He doesn't need any armpit hairs yet!  Too funny.

I've got Food Network playing in the background.  I hear Anne tell a similar story.  That when she was growing up, her mom told her that the Irish believe that the crusts of the bread makes your hair grow curly.  She said that she didn't need any help with that.  Reminded me of Kavin's perspective.

Out of the mouth of babes...King Jr.

Sunday night
Kavin: It's a holiday.
Me: How do you know?
Kavin: Teacher said. It's the King Jr day.
Me: Oh. So we have friends coming over?
Kavin: Yeah. My friends. Maka, Pili, and Mele.

Monday morning
Kavin just informed me, "Aunty, you do know that King Jr. is dead, right? So, he's not coming to the party today, but that's okay, I'll eat the chocolate cake for him."
